The Zebra Moray Eel is a visually striking and relatively docile member of the moray family, making it one of the most desirable eels for large home aquaria. Its elongated, muscular body is covered in a dense pattern of narrow white-to-cream vertical bands against a deep chocolate-brown or black background, mimicking the stripes of a zebra. Unlike many other morays that possess sharp, needle-like teeth for catching fish, the Zebra Moray has specialized blunt, pebble-like teeth designed specifically for crushing the shells of crustaceans like crabs and lobsters. They are quite shy and spend the majority of their time with only their heads protruding from a favorite PVC pipe or rocky cave. Because they do not typically view fish as prey, they are much safer in a community tank than most other eel species.
