The Squareblock Anthias, also known as the Squareback is one of the most visually distinct members of the genus. Sexual dimorphism is highly pronounced in this species: males boast a deep magenta-to-purple body with a prominent, starkly defined pink-to-lavender rectangular patch on their sides. Females, by contrast, are a brilliant solid yellow or orange with a subtle violet line running from the eye to the pectoral fin. These are among the larger anthias species and are often found along deep reef walls and drop-offs. Due to their size and active nature, they require a larger aquarium with plenty of open swimming room and rocky overhangs where they can seek shelter if startled.
