The Spotted Boxfish, or Black Boxfish, displays incredible sexual dimorphism. Males are a stunning royal blue on the sides with bright orange spots and a black back covered in white spots, while females are a solid black-to-dark-brown entirely covered in fine white dots. Their bodies are rigid and rectangular, giving them a clumsy but endearing swimming style. They are found on clear seaward reefs and require high water quality and a peaceful environment. Like the Cowfish, they can release toxins when stressed. They are constant grazers, picking at rockwork for algae and tiny invertebrates, and should be fed multiple times per day to maintain their body weight.
