Product overview
The Salifert Nitrate Profi Test Kit measures nitrate (NO₃) so you can catch spikes before hair algae takes off, coral colour browns, or growth stalls. Feeding, waste, and filter performance all move nitrate; without a precise test, those swings are easy to miss.
It uses liquid reagents and a powder catalyst, with a standard scale and a more sensitive low range. Testing is done in a vial, not in the tank.
Key features
- Dual range: Standard 0.2–100 ppm, or high-sensitivity 0.02–10 ppm by reading through the side of the vial.
- Resolution: Down to 0.2 ppm (standard) or 0.02 ppm (low range).
- Tests per kit: About 60.
- Simple workflow: Fast colour-match test without extra lab steps.
- Off-tank: The sequence runs in a dedicated vial, so reagents do not enter the aquarium.
- Shelf life: Stabilised reagents to hold accuracy when stored correctly.
Water and system compatibility
- Water: Marine reefs and freshwater tanks, including planted aquascapes.
- Marine use: SPS, LPS, soft-coral tanks, and macroalgae refugiums.
- Nutrient control: Use the results to adjust carbon dosing, feeding, or water-change volume instead of guessing.
Testing and instructions
Always follow dosage & directions on product packaging.
Typical targets: 1.0–5.0 ppm for clean SPS reefs, or 10–20 ppm for fleshy LPS and soft corals. How often to test:
- New tank cycling: Every 2–3 days to track nitrite converting to nitrate.
- Mixed reef / moderate load: Weekly, then adjust feeding or mechanical media.
- High-demand SPS: Every 3–5 days, to keep nitrate in balance with phosphate and reduce bleaching risk.
- Ultra-low nutrient (ULNS): Test often on the low-range scale so nitrate does not hit zero (corals can starve).
Storage
- Spoon: Do not mix reagent spoons. Clean and dry the red micro-spoon straight after use; a dirty scoop skews the colour.
- Box: Cool, dry cupboard out of direct sunlight. Do not freeze or overheat the reagents.
- Vial: Rinse with RO/DI water and dry with a clean tissue so leftover reagent does not contaminate the next test.
