Product overview
The Salifert KH/Alkalinity Test Kit measures carbonate alkalinity so you can catch swings before they stall coral growth, weaken skeletons, or cause tissue loss. Calcification and coralline growth pull buffers from the water; without a precise test, those drops are easy to miss.
It uses a liquid reagent and a clear colour-change indicator. Testing is done in a vial, not in the tank.
Key features
- Titration: High-contrast indicator and reagent; colour shifts from pink/purple to yellow/green.
- Resolution: 0.1 dKH or 0.03 meq/L, so small trends show up early.
- Tests per kit: About 100–200, depending on the starting dKH.
- Simple workflow: Fast titration without extra lab steps.
- Off-tank: The sequence runs in a dedicated vial, so reagents do not enter the aquarium.
- Shelf life: Stabilised reagents to hold accuracy when stored correctly.
Water and system compatibility
- Water: Marine reefs and freshwater tanks, including planted aquascapes and African cichlid systems.
- Marine use: SPS, LPS, and soft-coral tanks.
- Dosing: Use the results to set daily consumption and automatic buffer doses instead of guessing.
Testing and instructions
Always follow dosage & directions on product packaging.
Typical marine targets are 7.0–11.0 dKH, or 8.4 dKH if you follow a specialised program. How often to test:
- New tank / rock maturation: Every 3 days while cycling settles.
- Mixed reef / moderate load: Weekly, then adjust manual buffering.
- High-demand SPS: Every 2–3 days to track carbonate uptake.
- Ultra-low nutrient (ULNS): Test often so alkalinity does not drop under strong lighting (low KH can burn tissue).
Storage
- Caps: Seal droppers as soon as you finish. Evaporation skews the titration.
- Box: Cool, dry cupboard out of direct sunlight. Do not freeze or overheat the reagents.
- Vial: Rinse with RO/DI water and dry with a clean tissue so leftover reagent does not contaminate the next test.
Specifications
