The Salifert Freshwater Nitrite Test Kit measures nitrite (NO₂) in freshwater tanks so you can catch toxic spikes when a new tank is cycling or the biofilter is overloaded. Unseen nitrite slows maturation, stresses fish respiration, and can harm fish and invertebrates.
The liquid reagents are made for freshwater chemistry, not marine salt. Results are a clear colour match within minutes, more precise than typical test strips. Testing is done in a vial, not in the tank.

Testing and instructions
Always follow dosage & directions on product packaging.
Established freshwater tanks should read 0 ppm. How often to test:

New tank cycling: Every 2 days to track ammonia converting to nitrite, then to nitrate.

After medication / quarantine: Daily, in case the filter bed has crashed.

Heavy feeding or new fish: Every 3–5 days after adding a large group.

Shrimp and invertebrates: Test often so nitrite does not build to toxic levels.
Storage

Caps: Seal bottles as soon as you finish. Evaporation or moisture in the reagents skews the colour.

Box: Cool, dry cupboard out of direct sunlight. Do not freeze or overheat the reagents.

Vial: Rinse with RO/DI water and dry with a clean tissue so leftover reagent does not contaminate the next test.
