Product overview
The Salifert Copper Profi Test Kit measures copper so you can keep quarantine treatments in range and check tap water. Marine velvet and ich often need copper in a hospital tank. If the level drops, the parasite can survive; if it spikes, fish can be harmed and invertebrates die quickly.
The reagents read both free ionic copper and weakly chelated treatments (for example copper bound with citric acid). Testing is done in a vial, not in the tank. Allow 10–20 minutes for the colour to develop.
Key features
- Dual form: Dissolved ionic copper and weakly chelated medications.
- Scale: 0.05–2.0 ppm / mg/L copper (Cu).
- Tests per kit: About 50.
- Timing: 10–20 minute wait for a full result. Strongly bound medications may need the full 20 minutes; reading early can give a false negative.
- Off-tank: The sequence runs in a dedicated vial, so reagents do not enter the aquarium.
- Tap water: Can show copper leached from household pipes before it reaches a marine tank.
Water and system compatibility
- Water: Marine, freshwater, and ponds, at pH 7.5–9.0.
- Livestock: Copper is highly toxic to invertebrates, hard and soft corals, crabs, and shrimp. Test quarantine or hospital tanks on their own. Do not treat a display reef with copper.
Testing and instructions
Always follow dosage & directions on product packaging.
Display tanks should read 0.00 ppm. Hold the therapeutic level only in a dedicated quarantine tank. How often to test:
- Active quarantine: Twice daily (morning and evening). Copper is absorbed by seals and plastics, so the dose can fall.
- After treatment: Every 24 hours until Cuprisorb, carbon, or similar media have stripped copper from the water.
- Source water: Monthly on raw tap or unmixed RO/DI, to rule out pipe leaching before water changes.
- Display troubleshooting: Test at once if snails, shrimp, or corals retract or die without a clear cause, to rule out heavy-metal poisoning.
Storage
- Timer: Do not shorten the standing time, especially with strongly bound medications.
- Box: Cool, dry cupboard out of direct sunlight. Do not freeze or overheat the reagents.
- Vial: Rinse with RO/DI water and dry with a clean tissue so leftover reagent does not scale the next test.
