The Longnose Hawkfish is perhaps the most unique-looking member of the family, featuring an incredibly elongated, needle-like snout and a distinctive red-and-white "crosshatch" or "plaid" pattern across its entire body. Unlike the stockier hawkfish, the Longnose has a more slender, streamlined profile. It is a master of camouflage in the wild, often perching among the branches of gorgonians or black corals where its pattern breaks up its silhouette. In the aquarium, it is a fascinating and peaceful inhabitant that loves to "watch" its surroundings. They are surprisingly good jumpers, so a tight-fitting lid is essential. While they are safe with most corals, their long snout is perfectly designed for plucking small shrimp out of tight spots.
