Bariene Tang (Acanthurus bariene)
The Bariene Tang—also known as the Black-Spot Surgeonfish or Eye-Spot Surgeonfish—is an impressive, showstopper addition for extra-large marine aquariums. Juveniles display a subtle olive-brown coloration, but as they mature into adults, they develop striking details: a deep brownish-tan body covered in fine horizontal lines, a rich yellow upper dorsal area, bright electric-blue trimming along the fins, and a distinct dark spot behind the eye. Active and constantly on the move, this species inhabits the mid-to-bottom water column, cruising open swimming channels and grazing on live rock. Given their peaceful nature toward non-tang tankmates, they make excellent display centerpiece fish, though they will show territorial behavior toward other surgeonfish with similar body shapes. A mature, well-established aquarium with strong water movement, efficient filtration, and plenty of rockwork caves is essential to satisfy their active lifestyle and grazing habits. While generally safe with corals, they require a heavy herbivorous diet rich in marine algae to maintain color and immune health.
