Product overview
The Salifert Freshwater pH Profi Test Kit measures pH in freshwater tanks so you can catch drift before livestock is stressed, nutrients lock out at the roots, or plant growth stalls. Dissolved CO₂, buffer capacity, and organic breakdown all move acidity; without a precise test, those shifts are easy to miss.
The liquid reagents are made for freshwater chemistry and read across a wide, clearly graduated colour scale. Testing is done in a vial, not in the tank.
Key features
- Colour scale: High-contrast liquid indicator with sharp steps for an unambiguous reading.
- Resolution: 0.2 pH units, so small drifts show up early.
- Range: 6.0–8.6 pH.
- Tests per kit: About 80.
- Simple workflow: Fast colour-match test without extra lab steps.
- Off-tank: The sequence runs in a dedicated vial, so reagents do not enter the aquarium.
- Shelf life: Stabilised reagents to hold accuracy when stored correctly.
Water and system compatibility
- Water: Freshwater only. Not for marine or reef tanks.
- Use: Planted aquascapes, community tanks, shrimp breeding, and African cichlid systems.
- Adjustment: Use the results to set CO₂ injection or mineral buffering instead of guessing.
Testing and instructions
Always follow dosage & directions on product packaging.
Match the target to the livestock: typically 6.5–7.2 for planted community tanks, or 8.0+ for African cichlids. How often to test:
- New tank cycling: Every 2 days with ammonia, to see how biological acid production moves the baseline.
- High-tech (CO₂ injection): Twice a week — once just before lights/CO₂ turn on, and once just before they turn off — to check daily gas stability.
- Water changes: Test before and after so incoming water matches the display.
- Shrimp and invertebrates: Test often; sudden pH shifts can cause failed or early moults.
Storage
- Caps: Seal bottles as soon as you finish. Evaporation or moisture in the reagents skews the colour.
- Box: Cool, dry cupboard out of direct sunlight. Do not freeze or overheat the reagents.
- Vial: Rinse with RO/DI water and dry with a clean tissue so leftover reagent does not contaminate the next test.
