The Firefish Goby is an elegant and popular reef inhabitant featuring a starkly divided color scheme: a white-to-silver anterior that transitions into a fiery orange and deep red tail. Its most notable feature is an exceptionally long, first dorsal fin ray that it flicks back and forth to communicate or wedge itself into rocky crevices. Firefish are timid, hovering just above the rockwork to catch passing plankton, and will dart into a "bolt hole" at the first sign of danger. They are peaceful and reef-safe but should not be kept with aggressive tankmates that might bully them into hiding permanently.
