The Chocolate Goby, also commonly known as the Banded Goby or Dragon Goby, is a hardworking and attractive species prized for its ability to clean the sand bed. Its body features a beautiful base of light tan to cream, overlaid with broad, dark chocolate-brown vertical bands and a series of iridescent blue-green spots on its head and dorsal fins. Unlike many other sand-sifters, this species is known to hover just above the substrate, taking in mouthfuls of sand and filtering them through its gills to find food. They are also famous for their appetite for nuisance filamentous algae and cyanobacteria, making them a dual-purpose utility fish. They are generally peaceful and hardy, often establishing a home base under a specific rock which they will defend from other similar-looking gobies.
