The Salifert Freshwater Ammonia Profi Test Kit measures total ammonia (NH₃ + NH₄⁺) in freshwater tanks so you can catch toxic spikes when a new tank is cycling or the biofilter is overloaded. Unseen ammonia causes respiratory distress, gill damage, and can harm fish and invertebrates.
The liquid reagents are made for freshwater chemistry. Testing is done in a vial, not in the tank.

Established freshwater tanks should stay under 0.25 mg/L (ppm) total ammonia. How often to test:

New tank cycling: Every 2 days to track the ammonia spike and decline before nitrite builds.

After medication / quarantine: Daily, in case the filter bed has crashed.

After a death: Test straight away if a fish or large invertebrate dies, so the extra load does not spike ammonia.

Shrimp and invertebrates: Test often so waste stays below stressful levels.
Storage

Caps: Seal bottles as soon as you finish. Evaporation or moisture in the reagents skews the colour.

Box: Cool, dry cupboard out of direct sunlight. Do not freeze or overheat the reagents.

Vial: Rinse with RO/DI water and dry with a clean tissue so leftover reagent does not contaminate the next test.
